So, according to this article, the attack on two Navy Destroyers on August 4, 1964 that led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and a blank check for escalation in Vietnam, um, never happened.
Apparently, while there wasn't a fabrication of evidence to support the attack, officials inflated the intelligence to suit their own needs. William Faulkner once said, "The past isn't dead. The past isn't even past." Damn did he get it right.
Next week I expect intelligence analysts will reveal there isn't actually a Gulf of Tonkin at all and that Vietnam was a CIA code-word for France.
