Olympic Cinema Recommendation

Do you want to celebrate the 2006 Winter Games, but you hate watching them and are pissed at the Olympic committee for preempting West Wing until March? In that case, might I recommend a film for your viewing enjoyment that will help you both celebrate the Olympics and seem like a film snob?

Heaven is a film from director Tom Tykwer and stars Giovani Ribisi and Ocscar winner Cate Blanchett. It's about a woman (Blanchett) who takes the law into her own hands after police ignore her pleas to arrest the man responsible for her husband's death and finds herself not only under arrest, but falling in love with a police officer (Ribisi). It's a haunting film about the metaphysical search for love and redemption.

So what's the connection to the Winter Olympics, you ask? Well, the film takes place in Turin, Italy.

I've been wanting to see that for a while. I've seen two Twyker films--Run Lola Run and The Princess and the Warrior--and really liked both. Plus, Heaven just sounded good.

It is a very good film but it's totally unlike the frantic style of Run Lola Run. Heaven is a very subtle, patient film and is much more character-centered.
