And, of course, some people draw entirely the wrong lesson from the rioting in Paris. I should have expected it, but I didn't: the white/conservative backlash against "immigrants" and the din of back-slapping among nativists. Immigration is now, has been, and will always be the great strength of this country. Those who fail to remember the panic that ensued when those who immigrated first realized that they had to let others into the party resurrect, like clockwork, the same old tropes. Incredibly, it bears repeating: unless you're a Native American, you came here on a boat, and your ancestors were little different, by and large, from today's huddled masses. Anyone remember this canard, for example?



We may not always handle immigration well. There is room for improvement. But unless we want to end up like Europe, anti-immigrant hysteria is not a productive use of one's time.
