Expediency

I'd wanted to hold off on posting until I sent my apps in (tomorrow? Friday?), but, like a knee-jerk, I see "torture," I get peeved. That Post article's quite illuminating. The thing that really jumped out at me, however, is how the administration takes a position (like secretly holding suspects) without thinking about it fully ahead of time, then defends it ferociously as integral to the Safety of Our Nation. Other examples, the Department of Homeland Security flip-flop (no, it's a stupid idea!), invading Iraq, de-Baathifying the Iraqi army, and nominating Harriet Miers. It's a policy of expedience--the administration does what it wants, thinking it's easy/necessary, though it isn't.

Of course, when it becomes apparent that the decision was wrong, they flip-flop. I don't see them switching on the torture issue, however.
