So Republicans are unveiling their lobbyist reform package. Democrats dropped the ball by not rolling theirs out first but they may have another political opportunity. You see, Denny Hastert's bill, allegedly used to ban expensive meals and luxurious trips, doesn't actually do that. There's a loophole big enough to drive the proverbial truck through.
From the Washington Post: "The only requirement would be that whenever a lobbyist pays the bill, he or she must also hand the lawmaker a campaign contribution. Then the transaction would be perfectly okay."
If Democrats have the balls to call the Republicans on this bullshit, it can score big political gains and hurt an already weak enemy.
For the record, I understand members of Congress having meals with lobbyists to discuss legislation. Taking a $50,000 vacation to Scotland aboard a private plane so you can play golf is corruption and bribery.
