The inventor of ramen, Momofuku Ando, died on Friday. While saddened, I'm glad of four things: ramen; learning an etymology of the name of the well-regarded restaurant Momofuku; this editorial, which a friend pointed out; and the following quote, from the obit.
In July 2005, the company vacuum-packed portions of instant noodles so that a Japanese astronaut, Soichi Noguchi, could have them on the space shuttle Discovery. Mr. Ando said at the time, "I've realized my dream that noodles can go into space."
And my dream has been realized too!
