Provincialism

Did you know that Paraguay fought

a war with Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay between 1864 and 1870 that left approximately 57% of the population of Paraguay dead? I was completely unaware that this had occurred, while I'm sure every Argentinian schoolchild learns it in History 101. Of course, the American Civil War and its aftermath probably had something to do with the lesser prominence of the War of the Triple Alliance, but I know a fair amount about the Franco-Prussian War, and the difference isn't that apparent but for the larger prominence of Europe in the global weltanschauung of our times.
