Never underestimate the ability of the modern Democratic Party to lose an election, I suppose is the lesson.

More than ever, I flash back to 2004, when the Democratic Party discarded two relatively young, populist candidates with mass appeal for the blandest candidate imaginable on the basis of some nebulous metric of "electability". I believe that this is our John Kerry moment--except this time around the Democratic Party is doing the Swiftboating for the Republicans.
