Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima has more history against [Daisuke] Matsuzaka, as he was 32 for 118 (.271) with 5 homers and 11 R.B.I. in Japan. While Matsuzaka was praised for pitching seven effective innings in a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals last week, Johjima called that outing typical.
If Johjima ever gave teammates a scouting report on Matsuzaka, he said through an interpreter, it would be brief.
“The first thing that I think we all have to keep in mind is pray to God,” Johjima said. “That’s what I do first.” (emphasis supplied)
